Welcome to the third blog of the year. Great to report that we have a new and exciting website, log on and check out the improvements. Also, we are now on Facebook, Maria from golf reception is in charge and check out photographs from last Friday & Saturday competitions.

Congratulations to Henrique Carvalhão, Simon Worton & Silvestre Agostinho the last 3 order of merit winners. Mention too of the last 2 pairs winners, Rob & Tina Walsh in September & John Keppel & Geraldine Kenny in October. Well done to all.

Monday’s & Wednesday’s

Both competitions days continue to flourish, both at maximum entry levels. Next Wednesday (05/11) will be a foursome, due to the course being extremely busy.

Matchplay 2014/15

The matchplay draw has been made and is posted on the notice board, all first round matches must be completed by 31/12/14, no extensions. John Mooney is in charge of the matchplay this year and any queries should be addressed to him.

Inter-club matches

We have had 3 inter-club matches since my last blog, 2 in the Atlantic cup and a challenge match against Quinta da Ria. Unfortunately, we lost both A.C. matches by the narrowest of margins, both games were away and both finished 3-2. In Quinta do Peru & Troia all of our defeats were settled on the last green, whereas our wins were won out the course, heart-breaking.
However, we did have a win in our twice annual challenge, a magnificent 8-1 victory against a strong Quinta da Ria side. How strong? Well they beat Royal Obidos 10-8 (over 2 days). We fielded a large number of debutants to inter club competition and yes they all won.
The future of the A.C. was under threat this year resulting in a number of cancellations, however, thanks to the intervention of Francisco, who banged heads together we will complete all our matches in November. See below our schedule, I would ask all available members to sign up and give me a selection headache.

  • Nov. 9 away to Penha Longa
  • Nov. 23 home to Troia
  • Nov. 30 home to Quinta Peru

Captain/Pro Challenge

We have had 3 matches to-date, 2 hard fought wins and a defeat in our first game.
Eric Tonge & Andy Mann took our scalp with a well deserved win on the 18th.
Kevin Mendonza & Tim Jones also finished on the last, this time in our favor. Mark’s 5 birdies in the first 10 holes made life very difficult for Michael & Celia Aston, even with Celia’s excellent birdie on the second (just a halve) we prevailed on the 15th.
Next up are Steve & Caroline Simpson and the next available challenge date is the 20th of November.

We have our second 30 minute Rules of Golf session next Friday the 31st, I would urge all members to attend, regardless of age, experience or handicap, there is something to learn for everybody. There are 2 more sessions planned before year end, no charge to members. Questions are set by Mark and he makes himself available to explain the answers.

Friday Fun Golf

Friday’s continue to thrive under the firm guidance of Joy Mendonza. Unbelievable numbers have rolled up in the last few weeks, twice Joy has had to accommodate over 50 competitors, again thanks to Francisco for his assistance in providing extra tee-times. We have also had guest presenters when Joy was unavailable, a big thank you to Joan Gibson, Peter Reed & Rune Lundberg for their willingness to step into the breach.
However, the major success of the Friday’s is the number of sponsors it has attracted. I am very grateful for the time & money spent, all going to the charity.
I would like to thank the following people for the sponsorship over the last 2 months:

  • Miguel D’Abreu
  • Alison & Clive Boden (Scotland day)
  • Thomas & Sabine Wiedenbruch
  • Peter & Margaret McQue

Captain’s Charity

As you maybe aware the charity target is 15,000 euro, a daunting challenge.
However, with the great generosity shown to the fund by the members I am starting to believe that WE can achieve this goal. I have received a number of anonymous donations during the last number of weeks. I am also happy to report that the very kind gesture by Joan Gibson on the occasion of her birthday celebration last Wednesday raised a whopping 1,145 euro. Many thanks again Joan.
The fund total now stands at 6,113 euro with 7 months still to come.

Finally, best wishes to all members who are unwell or in hospital, our thoughts are with you and we wish you all a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you on the fairways of Praia D’El Rey soon.
