Welcome everybody to the first Captain’s blog for golf season 2014/15. Firstly, I would like to offer a huge thank you on all our behave’s to a wonderful captain Caroline Simpson.

I would like to take this opportunity of welcoming my Vice-Captain, John Mooney and committee members, Maria-Joao, Joy & Rune.

Captain’s Charity

This year the children playground in Serra is the nominated charity. The facility is already in place, however, due to lack of funds it has fallen into disrepair and indeed it was never fitted out with equipment. The estimated cost to fit out the playground is 15,000 euro, an ambitious sum, however, we will endeavor to meet this target.

Funds raised

We kicked out the fund raising with a lottery on the length of the Captain’s drive, a very generous 345 euro was bid, ( unimpressed with guesses of under 100 metres & O.B.) The correct wager was 200 metre & David Haide received the novelty prize as the winner.

On Friday the 13th we had a Bake Sale organized by Anne Anderson ably assisted by Dori Bracken. A “stall” decked out in bunting, linen, plates ect was provided by the wonderful Marta and her staff. Thanks to everyone who donated produce and a magnificent 755 euros was raised.

A further 850 euro was donated by 2 gentlemen who prefer to remain anonymous. Further private donations were also received, the funds raised now stand at 2,045 euro, thanks to all.

Any ideas for further events will be considered.

Denise & Kevin Wharton were our fist private sponsors for Fun Friday golf, hopefully starting a trend, Monday team golf or Friday Fun golf may be sponsored at a cost of 100 euro, all entry fees paid on the day go to the Captain’s charity. Contact me or any committee if you wish to become a sponsor.

Golf Events

The highlight of the month was ,of course ,Portugal day, a fantastic day with 104 players. Wonderful lunch, prizes , free golf for members and their guests, all excellently organized by Francisco Cadete and sponsored by Beltico. The worthy winner was Vasco Countinho with a fantastic 43 points (level par gross) Congratulations to Jim Harris who won the first O.O.M. for golf season 2014/15, Jim now sits proudly at the top of the O.O.M. table for nett and gross golfer of the year.

Monday, Wednesday & Friday golf continues to thrive and well done to all winners in June. We had teams representing the club in 2 national competitions in June, the mid-amatuer and the national seniors championship, creditable performances were registered by both teams. Special mention for Martin Playell first ever hole in one, achieved on the 8th on Friday Fun golf.

July Fixtures

Another busy month ahead. Atlantic trophy fixture away to Penha Longa on the 19th, I would urge anybody who is available to put their name forward for selection, this can be done at golf reception. The match against P. Longa is vital to us as a win will keep our chances of winning the league intact. July pairs on the 12th and a busy weekend on the 26/27th with July’s O.O.M. followed by the club pairs championship the next day.

Finally, I would like to wish Alan Symonds a speedy recovery after his recent operation and I look forward to our next game together.
