Christmas at PDR flew by, almost daily golf, festivities and some very unusual weather.
The World Cup was easily won by Portugal and the Rest of the World, well played. England, we put up a good fight, we’ll be back next year!
Well played Goncalo, overall winner of singles competition.
The Hangover trophy was played in shocking stormy weather, certainly blew any cobwebs away!
John Sargeant was the winner with 17 points on count back from Kay Cottrell.
The Portucale Trophy golf was rain/storm delayed. However the dinner in the evening was wonderful, thank you so much to Jane and Jeremy Wilson, and Angella Walton for all their hard work, their efforts made the evening a huge success. I have attached Jeremy’s report. The final money raised for Aconchego Children’s home in Peniche, was €3.625. This is fantastic and they are enormously grateful.
The trophy was finally played for 2 days later. Unfortunately conditions were so atrocious that only 27 intrepid golfers actually competed!
Simon Worton won with a stunning 32 points!
Peter McQue fulfilled a lifetime dream and won the Portucale Residents Trophy!
Thank you all very much for your generous Staff Christmas donations, we raised €660. This was divided between reception staff, rangers and green keepers. This was presented on the Portucale golf day, they were very happy and I received a lovely thank you letter from Pedro Rebelo the head green keeper.
On Saturday 11th January an elite team went to Troia, there was a fun team competition and then lunch and Troia were awarded the Atlantic Trophy.
I am proud to say thank you to Francisco Cadete, Goncalo Moto, Helen and Robert Baardolf, Connie Fahy and Vinnie Madigan and Peter Reed, they WON the competition on the day!
12th January Pairs Trophy, betterball was won by Steve and Kay Cottrell with 43 points. Just to prove that Steve does play well when he plays with Kay!
A team of 12 will go to Quinta da Ria in the Algarve for an away match on the 15/16th Feb. This is a fun match (but there is a trophy!)
If you would like to go sign up at reception.
That’s all folks, do check the photos at the official blog, and a Very Happy New Year!
2014 Portucale Charity Golf Competition
This year the Portucale Charity Golf Competition took on a slightly different form in that due to the wet weather the dinner came before the golf.
Two representatives from our Captain’s charity, the children’s home in Peniche, attended the dinner. They were welcomed by Caroline and they told us about the work they do at the home.
The golf club gave us an excellent meal in the club house attended by 90 members and guests. Joan Gibson kindly sponsored the wine and our vice-captain, Vincent organised more fund raising during the evening and a good time was had by all. About 2000 euros was raised. The raffle organised so well by Angella made an amazing 750 euros. The successful Art Auction another 1400 euros. A big thank you to the artists and those who bought the paintings/prints.
The golf was re-arranged for Saturday 4th January. 28 players completed the 18 holes, the weather was very wet and extremely windy.
The results are as follows:
- Overall Winner – Simon Worton with 32 points
- Best Portucale Owner – Peter McQue with 28 points
- Second Net – Peter Reed with 31 points
- Third Net – Aileen O Hanrahan with 31 points
- Best Gross Man – Carl Bolus
- Best Gross Lady – Jane Wilson
- Nearest Pin Man – Carl Bolus
- Nearest Pin Lady – Jane Wilson
- Longest Drive Man – Alex Campbell
- Longest Drive Lady – Mandy Sargeant
The Silent Art Auction made 1400 euros. Thank you to all the artists who kindly donated paintings and prints, you are all very talented. And a big thank you to all who participated and contributed so generously.
